In common usage,
the baud rate of a modem is the
number of bits it can send or
receive in a second. Technically, baud is the number of times in a second that
the carrier signal shifts value - for example a 1200 bit-per-second modem
actually runs at 300 baud, but it moves 4 bits per baud [(4 x 300) bits per
second = 1200 bits per second].

A business name is a name under which a business operates. Business name registration provides a means of identifying the owners of the business and is obtained under state or territory legislation. Registration of a business name does not provide proprietary rights.
(Because it’s Time
NETwork or because it’s there NETwork) is a network of educational sites distinct and separate from the
Internet. However, e-mail is freely exchanged between BITNET and the Internet. Listservs®,
the most popular form of e-mail discussion groups, originated on BITNET. BITNET
machines are usually mainframes running on the VMS operating system, and the
network is probably the only international network that is shrinking.
(Binary
DigIT) - A bit
is the smallest unit of data transfer on a computer network. Bits represent the
two binary values ‘on’ or ‘off’ and are often stored on computers as the
digital numbers '1' and '0'. However, in networking, it is also possible to ‘encode’
bits by electrical signals and pulses of light. Bandwidth is usually measured
in bits per second.
(Bulletin Board System) - A computerized meeting and
announcement system that makes it possible for users to engage in discussions,
upload and download files and make announcements without the people necessarily
being connected to the computer simultaneously. There are many thousands of
them across the globe, most being very small, running on a single IBM clone PC
with 1 or 2 phone lines. On the other hand, there are also those that are very
large and the line between a BBS and a system like CompuServe gets crossed at
some point, but it is not clearly drawn.
Bandwidth is a measure
of available or consumed data communication resources (average rate of
successful data transfer through a communication path) expressed in bit/sec. or
its multiples (kbit/sec., Mbit/sec. etc.) .A full page of English text is about
16,000 bits. A fast modem can move about 15,000 bits in one second. A full-motion
full-screen video would require about 10,000,000 bits per second.
A backbone in the
given context is a line or series of connections that works fast and forms a
major pathway within a network. The term is relative as a backbone in a small network is likely to be much smaller
than many non-backbone lines in a large network.
